Description:

This workshop will present a six-step approach to doing ACT with the matrix based on the book The Essential Guide to the ACT Matrix (New Harbinger, 2016). The ACT Matrix is revolutionizing Acceptance and Commitment Therapy.

Based on an elegant and simple premise, the matrix takes clinical interventions to a more flexible and sophisticated level. Whether you’re new to ACT or already experienced, the six steps approach developed at the Contextual Psychology Institute aims to supercharge your clinical work with even your most challenging clients. By learning to look through the matrix point of view, help your clients learn how to mindfully notice obstacles and choose to engage in “toward moves” — the key to valued living. As one of the most internationally sought-after ACT workshops, this training has the potential to transform your clinical practice and your life.

Location:

2222 Bush Street, San Francisco, CA 94115

Included in the training fees:

12 hours of instruction; handouts; morning coffee, tea and bagels, afternoon snacks

Intended Audience

This training is appropriate for mental healthcare providers at all levels of expertise and working with any population in any treatment setting.

After the training, participants will be able to:

  1. Present the ACT model of psychopathology and define psychological flexibility.
  2. Use the six steps approach to using the ACT matrix and integrate a relationship-focused approach to ACT.
  3. Present the ACT matrix point of view to clients and prompt clients to evaluate the workability of moving away behavior.
  4. Help clients notice and name their stuck loops
  5. Help clients notice the difference between what can be controlled (five senses experience) and what gets more sticky as one attempts to control it (inner experience).
  6. Use the Hooks Worksheet and metaphor to promote defusion.
  7. Use validation skills through the art of Yessing and engage clients in the skills of verbal Aikido using the Verbal Aikido Worksheet.
  8. Promote self-compassion and prompt behavior change through the perspective-taking interview exercise.
  9. Use the bridging questions to get precise and actionable feedback from clients.
  10. Hold a consistent functional contextual stance in clinical work.
  11. Conduct a functional analysis with the ACT Matrix
  12. Present and promote ACT-congruent therapeutic objectives.

This training is fully supported by fees – there is no commercial support.

The training is co-sponsored by the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science and the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science.
